Billie Mae McWherter, 76, of Rockford, Illinois, died October 28, 2019, succumbing to cancer. Her family has gathered privately to say their final goodbyes at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Surviving are her sons, Jeff McElrath of Cedar Rapids, Tommy McElrath of Katy, Texas, and Richard McElrath of Minnesota; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Wisdom and Dorthy Deprist; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Billie was preceded in death by her parents.
Billie Mae was born October 31, 1942, in Tiptonville, Tennessee, the daughter of Bill Martin and Lula Mae (McWherter) Pope. Tired of working in the fields, she moved to Rockford, Illinois in 1973, where she raised her three sons by herself. Billie, always a good cook, began cooking for the local school district until the age of 67. She was determined to always make her own way in life and did a great job of it, not moving to Cedar Rapids to be near family until her final months.
