Betty Hanley Scott

Betty Jane Hanley Scott, 85 of Mount Vernon, died Monday, May 2, 2005 in her home from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Ceremony of Remembering will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2005 at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Burial in Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Surviving Betty are her son Reid Hanley and his wife Linda Bergstrom of Chicago, Illinois; a daughter Susan Hanley of St. Louis, Missouri; a step-son Richard K. Scott and Sue Brosh of Louden, Tennessee; two granddaughters: Kate Scott Juhlander, Beth Scott Hauer; and one great grandson on the way. Preceding Betty in death are: her husband Harold R. "Hop" Hanley, and her second husband Paul K. "Scotty" Scott. Betty was born December 28, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of Joseph H. and Helen M. Dahl Weiss. She grew up in a happy extended family home, occupied by grandparents, uncles, aunts, and parents. Betty graduated Cum Laude from Ripon College in Wisconsin, where she was chosen by Spencer Tracy as one of the "Ten Most Beautiful Girls on Campus." She did her graduate work at the University of Iowa in Library Science. Betty was a second grade teacher before taking over the Elementary and High School Libraries for the Mount Vernon Community Schools for twenty-five years. Betty was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, a fifty-year member of the Altruia Club, Hillcrest Country Club, and many bridge clubs. Betty was a proud and supportive mom and wonderful wife who never interfered and was always there when you needed her. She delighted in the company of friends and was a great neighbor. Betty loved to garden, was a gifted pastel artist, and an excellent cook and hostess. Especially important to her was her Norwegian heritage, and she treasured her trips to Norway. An eternal optimist, Betty didn't plan her life..she lived her life. Memorials in Betty's honor may be sent to the Lisbon/Mount Vernon Ambulance, P. O.
