Arlo Ray Whitman

Arlo Ray Whitman, 81, of Lisbon, died March 12, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha. A Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 16, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, where the family will greet friends Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. with Vigil Service following. Burial: Lisbon Cemetery. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral and Memorial Services (formerly Morgan's), Mount Vernon. Surviving Arlo are his wife of 57 years, Jean Anne; children: Barbara (Craig) Bova of Cedar Rapids, Marc (Cathy) of Lisbon, Barry (Lori) of Pella, and Molly (John) Novak of Lisbon; eight grandchildren: Katie, Phillip, Joshua, Joseph, Christopher, Kelsey, Lauren and Jacob; eight great-grandchildren; Aunt Marge Sandstoe; sister Dorothy (William) Stork; brother Glenn; sisters-in-law Janette Whitman, Janice Majors; brothers-in-law: Richard (Alberta) Shulista; James (Judy) Shulista; and special friend 'brother' Wallace (Shirley) Burlingame, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Whitman and Mabel Clark Whitman Suppel; in-laws Joseph and Ann Shulista; brothers, Kenneth and Clair Whitman; and a nephew David Whitman. Arlo was born October 9, 1933, in Lisbon where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1952. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served on the USS Teaberry until discharge in 1956. He met Jean Anne Shulista in country school and the two were married June 18, 1957 in St. John's Catholic Church in Lisbon. He worked in the Lisbon Creamery, Staub Construction and was co-owner of Heritage Homes of Schoff Construction. He retired from the maintenance department at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Arlo and Jean Anne wintered in Winter Ranch in Alamo, Texas. He was past president of the Optimist Club and the Lisbon Booster Club. He served on the Ambulance Committee, the Lisbon City Council, the Walmer Foundation Committee, and Lisbon Cyclops Post 109 of the American Legion. He enjoyed golf, cards, reading, fishing, hunting and traveling. The pride and joy of his life were his grandchildren and great grandchildren and he loved to attend their activities. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Arlo's honor may be sent to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, 315 18th Avenue, Hiawatha, Iowa 52233 and Camp Courageous, P. O. Box 418, Monticello, Iowa 52310.

We enjoyed Arlo and Jean Anne for many years in our association with them through the Lisbon School District.
