William Samuel Montgomery was born May 19, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Enoch 'Gene' and Geneveive (Volk) Montgomery. Sam attended Solon High School, where he played on their first football team, and graduated with the Class of 1958. He met Patricia Sievers at Danceland, and they were married on August 11, 1959, in Solon. Sam worked for Spahn & Rose for over twenty years, then began his own lumber yard company, Anamosa Building Supply. He belonged to many lumber organizations over the years, and was a long-time member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed traveling and keeping busy, and especially loved family gatherings including reunions and weddings, especially if there was a euchre or cribbage table set up. He could be described as 'a jack of all trades, but a master of none'.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; and brother, Joseph.
Sam and Pat came to visit us in Mississippi when our twins came home from the hospital in 2007. Sam was so amazed and happy when he held the boys for the first time. When we moved to Iowa, he always made a point to make us feel welcomed and loved. Sam always had kind words for all of our kids, and he made sure that the boys would come visit with him during Lisbon games. Sam was one of the most kind hearted men we have ever had the pleasure of knowing and loving.
Pat and family,
I’m so very sorry for your loss….What a Sam. I don’t think I eve r saw him mad, he was always smiling and laughing.
