Ivan Nienhaus. Visitation: 4-7:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil service at 4 p.m. Inurnment: 3:30 p.m. Monday, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Iowa. Survivors include her husband, John; children, Kim (Dan) Loudermilk of Atlanta, Georgia, Steve (Virginia) Van Steenhuyse of Mason City, Iowa, Sherri (Bob) Lanik of Houston, Texas, and Beth (David) Tessier of Bella Vista, Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Mariah and Elliott Althoff, Michael, Evan, Maggie, Liz and Joe Van Steenhuyse; two step-granddaughters, Annie Clare and Emma Tessier; two sisters, Maybeth Gilliam and Anne Baker Thomas; and special cousin, Carol Kuhl. Pat was born on March 8, 1936 in Russell, Iowa to Harley and Bernice (Fitzgerald) Baker. Pat started school in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Luzerne, Iowa at age 11. She attended high school in Blairstown, Iowa, graduating in 1953. She married her high school sweetheart, John Van Steenhuyse, on June 25, 1955. Their courtship was straight out of a 1950's romance. John was a star athlete and Pat was a cheerleader and class valedictorian. They married soon after graduation and moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they lived for the rest of their 59-year marriage. Pat was a very intelligent woman, and she channeled that intelligence into a successful career. She was a trailblazer for women in the workplace in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as illustrated in the Cedar Rapids Gazette by being featured as one of the first women to wear a pantsuit to work. She began her career at Stamats Publishing and moved up to become President of Type 2/GRI Printing Co., working in this position for 20 years. She retired from this position in 1994. She was well respected in her industry and was the first woman to receive the Ad Person of the Year Award in 1979. Pat was an avid reader who inspired all of her children to explore the world through books. She explored the world in other ways too, as she loved to travel, visiting the U.S. from Hawaii to Cape Cod. She had a great eye for color and design and, as a result, she had a beautiful home. Pat was devoted to her family. She came from a large extended family in which her cousins and sisters were all her best friends. She taught all of her children to become strong and independent people. She was a grandmother who was extremely involved in her grandchildren's lives, attending many soccer games, dance recitals and show choir competitions. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sisters-in-law. We will miss her quick wit, her beautiful smile and her wise advice. We love you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy.

  1. This beautiful woman was amazing at everything she did. I spent many years following in her footsteps and learned many lessons about life from her. She was an amazing mom, wife, sister, grandma, friend and business woman. She led by example to all who knew her. She will be missed!

  2. Rock and I met Pat and John several years back when they came to Houston to visit Sherri and Bob. We hit it off instantly. Every year we would visit when they came back to Houston. Rock and John would go golfing, while Pat, Sherri and I would visit. My favorite memory was the year they rented a condo in New Braunsfel. Rock and I went for the weekend, the guys played golf and Pat along with her girlfriends and I went shopping in Gruene Texas. We shopped, had lunch and shopped some more. I am so blessed to have such wonderful memories and a special connection with Pat! I kinda adopted her as a second mom. I will miss you Pat. We love you!

  3. Dear Sherri, Bob and family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I did not know her but she sounds like an amazing woman. May God bless you, your family and your mom.

  8. Dear Kim and family,
We are sending our thoughts and prayers to Cedar Rapids from Atlanta this afternoon as we fondly remember the joy of meeting Pat and John when they came with Kim and Dan to our house on New Years Day 2013. We are so sorry for your tremendous loss and celebrate with you the “quick wit, beautiful smile, wise advice” and remarkable life of your beloved mother.

    Much love, Mary and Clint

  9. So many great memories of “Gramma” Pat. She was a gentle soul. Kind and loving to everyone she knew. Great with our kids on the preschool carpool rides. Her memory makes me smile.

  11. What a wonderful woman. John and family, you are in our thoughts. This afternoon was full of those what might have been memories, as Pat was key in hiring both of us at Type2/GRI and Carl and I are still together many years later. So many great stories as you grew as a family, and company picnics. And Pat opened her home to so many bridal and baby showers in those years. Above and beyond the call, she was the glue that kept things going. Miss our chance meetings at Westdale and out to dinner, but she was a part of our lives.

  12. John, just thinking of you and will include you in prayers. Pat’s passing was “just in time to spend Holy Week & Easter with our Lord!” May your belief give you peace in the future and keep all the happy memories in a special place in your heart.
    Sincerely,
    Eleanor (Soucek) Rohde

  13. Steve and his Family :
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss.

I have only fond memories of your mother…especially of her lovely laughter. Peace, my friend.
