John Michael Schick, 75, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on April 16, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rosary: 4:00-4:30 p.m., Friday, April 26, 2024, Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.Visitation: 4:30-7:00 p.m., Friday, April 26, 2024, at the funeral home. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 27, 2024, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Burial: St. John's Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Luncheon: VFW Post 788, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. John was born on October 27, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Michael and Martha (Diedrich) Schick. He married Lousetta Driscoll in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1972. To this union were born David and Maureen. They divorced in 1989. He married Janice Engelmann-Welty on January 13, 1990, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were married until his death. John served in the United States Naval Reserve for twenty-three years, including active duty in Vietnam. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Chief Equipment Operator. John was a member of IUOE Local 234 for seventeen years. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Linn County Solid Waste Agency for twenty-four years. John was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. John was a member of several veterans associations, including Forty & Eight for fifty years, and the Cedar Rapids VFW. John was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to cook and spend time with his family. John was always willing to help people in need. John is survived by his wife, children, David Schick and Maureen Schick; two step-children; six granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Linda Drahos. John was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Barbara Sharp. Memorials may be made to the family in care of David Schick.

  5. Didn’t know John real well, we were in the same reserve unit in Waterloo but spent most of his drill week-ends at our headquarters in Glenview Naval Air Station in Illinois. After they decommissioned our detachment we started to have semi annual breakfast meetings in Waterloo but John only made a couple of the early ones. I did see John at the Hy Vee on Johnson Ave. and we always spent too long blocking traffic as we swapped stories. Was a great guy and Seabee, will be missed I am sure by all who knew him. My condolences to his family and friends.
