John J. Toms, 69, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Lowden, died Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. A Funeral Mass by All Saints Catholic Church will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. David O'Connor. Visitation from 5 - 8 p.m. Monday, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil service at 5:30 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. He is survived by two daughters, Laura Toms and Karen (Ed) Martin, all of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Curt Wery, Erica Wery, and Amanda Martin; two brothers, James (Peggy) Toms of Shueyville, and Michael (Jody) Toms of Marion; and his special friend of over 30 years, Kathie Wimer of Cedar Rapids; his former wife, Donna Randak of Emily, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. John was born November 15, 1939, and spent the majority of his life living in Cedar Rapids. As a young man, John began a distinguished career with the Cedar Rapids Gazette. His career culminated with owning and operating JT Distribution, a highly successful business which he started as one the Gazette's first independent contractors. John's exceptional work ethic allowed him to retire and move to Lowden where he spent several years enjoying his lifelong passion of the outdoors. John spent much of his time hunting and fishing with his many friends and family members. John was also an active member of several clubs and organizations over the years to include Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and Whitetails Unlimited. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy. John's family would like to thank Dr. Mary Anne Nelson, Dr. Kenneth Cearlock, the many caring members of the Hospice of Mercy care team, and the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

  1. John and I went hunting and fishing together in past years and I consider him a good friend. I am sorry to hear of his death. My sympathy to his family.

  3. Laurie,Karen and all of your family, Just wanted to let you know how sorry we were to hear of your dad’s passing. My dad,( Roxie ), thought so much of your dad, Johnny, and we all have special memories of our families together over the years. We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad time. My dad and Karen just were in AZ with me and are traveling the Southwest in their motor home at present but they send their thoughts and prayers.

    John was quite a guy. I worked several years with him at the Gazette and enjoyed hearing his hunting and fishing stories. He was truly a great guy and will be missed by everyone that new him. My thoughts and prayers to everyone. Gretchen
