He was an employee of Penick & Ford (now Penford) in Cedar Rapids for 28 years. He was later employed by the Cedar Rapids Community School District before retiring in 1988. John was a parishioner of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He was an ardent fan of Notre Dame football, and he spent many fall afternoons watching, listening to, reading about, talking about, celebrating with or agonizing with the team that he loved. Quick to smile and slow to anger, he made his way through life quietly, suffering misfortunes without complaint. He was a kind, modest and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor who enjoyed people and appreciated the simple pleasures of life. He was dearly loved, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. John's family extends its special thanks to the management and staff of the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their kindness and compassion during his final days. A memorial fund has been established.

We were honored, blessed and privaledged to meet John and your four, fine sons and Rosie, at our last U.S.S. Peter H. Burnett, ships crew reunion, at Branson, Mo!
John was indeed blessed with such a wonderful family!
John deserved the honor and respect he recieved from all that knew him. He was an honorable and moral man and served his country, in time of war, with devotion to duty!
We will miss our association and email contacts with him!
My prayer for him is:
Soft and safe to you my brother, be this earthly bed. Bright and glorious be your rising from it! Fragrant be the flowers bloom which here shall flourish. May the earliest buds of Spring ufold their beauties o’er your resting place, and here may the fragrance of the latest rose linger longest. So in the morning of the resurrection may your mortal frame spring again into newness of life and unfold in immortal beauties in the realms beyond the skies!
Fare thee well!

Mary, Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. We so enjoyed visiting with you and John, and getting to know you, when we all enjoyed one or two of Mike & Rosie’s famous fish fries here in Nebraska City. Peace. Kermit & Pat Holmes
