Gloria was born on August 16, 1933, to Francis Denis (Bud) Maher and Jane Lane Maher while living in Des Moines. At the age of two she moved to Cedar Rapids and was proud to call this city her home for the rest of her life. Gloria was the darling of her family, joining older brothers Denis, Richard (Dick), John, and Bill, and her younger brother Jim.
On June 9, 1956, she married her sweetheart Donald Joseph Fagan and they began a wonderful life together. They welcomed nine children and created a loving home that was a welcome spot for family, friends, and the neighborhood kids between Park Avenue and Grande Avenue SE for decades. After the heartbreaking passing of Don in 1996, Gloria continued to inspire and guide her family in gathering together to celebrate big and small moments of love.
Gloria was the kind of woman who lived a simple, wonderful life. She appreciated the beauty in every little thing around her, especially sunny days, and loved walks around the neighborhood and sitting on her porch. She attended daily mass as often as she was able, but always said a kind deed done for another counted, too. She had a sharp mind, thanks in part to being a committed reader, took interest in current events, loved sharing memories of days gone by, and was a Jeopardy pro.
She worked hard, prayed hard, and gave back to her community in so many ways over the years. But her true and absolute joy was her family. She hosted Easter egg hunts with great prizes, delighted in being together on all the holidays, including just last week for Thanksgiving, and always hosted donuts on Sundays after mass. She hardly missed a school, church, or sporting event for her grandchildren living in town. And she loved getting to visit her children and grandchildren that moved away from Cedar Rapids for special occasions and family fun.
So many people will remember Gloria as the true gem that she was. Her most admirable and incredible quality was her ability to love. The matriarch of a large Irish Catholic family, it was truly a marvel to watch Gloria love each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren just as they needed to be loved. To call her Mom or Grandma meant knowing you were loved wholly and completely. It was her life's work and her enduring legacy.
Gloria is preceded in death, and now lovingly welcomed to heaven, by her parents and five brothers, Denis, Dick, John, Bill, and Jim, brother-in-law James and sisters-in-law, Doris, Eileen and Catherine, and her husband, Don.
Those remaining to carry on her legacy of love and faith are her sweet friend and sister-in-law, Rosemary Maher, and three generations of family members.
Her children and their spouses: Janie Mills, Tom and Cindy Fagan, Mike and Sally Fagan, Cathy and John Downey, Jim Fagan, Dennis and Melissa Fagan, Diane and Doug Ropp, Susie Klinkhammer, and Brian Fagan.
Her grandchildren: Katie and Matt Giorgio, Joe Mills, Andy Mills and Laura Didier, Maggie and Matt Ireland, Dan Fagan and Sarah King, Mollie Fagan and Spencer Stater, Patrick and Allison Fagan, Kara Fagan, Sean Fagan, Kevin Fagan, Erin Fagan, Kelli Downey and Ryan Tinker, Anne and Yev Fastovskiy, Joe Downey, Emily Downey, Will Downey, Tom Downey, Casey Fagan, Eileen and Kevin Walsh, Michael and Brigid Ropp, Brian Ropp, Katy Ropp, Matthew Ropp, Jack Klinkhammer, Emma Klinkhammer, Connor Klinkhammer, and Caroline Klinkhammer.
And her great grandchildren: Tom and Lucy Giorgio, Frank, Oscar, and Gloria Jane Ireland, Wyatt and Cain Fagan-Stater, Annabelle Fagan, Leo and Francisco Downey-Tinker, and Lena, Coen and Calvin Fastovskiy.
She is also survived by many extended family members, including cousins, nieces and nephews and their families, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church, St. Matthew Church, or the Sisters of Mercy. The family thanks the healthcare and spiritual teams of the Mercy Medical Center Emergency Department for supporting and ministering a peaceful, prayerful, comfortable, and dignified farewell that lived up to her name, Gloria.

Aunt Glo you took everything that life threw at you in stride. Choosing to stay in your beloved city of Cedar Rapids you took care of your Mother and Father and their family home for many years while taking care of all of your children. Every year for Christmas for as long as I can remember Grandma Jane would give each of the grandchildren a pair of pajamas which we could open on Christmas eve. We all looked forward to opening this present. Not until I was of a certain age did I know that Aunt Gloria was the one who did all of the selecting and shopping for these P.J.s. Even after Grandma died Aunt Glo kept up the tradition. After Grandma Jane died Gloria and her family would have Grandpa Bud over every night for supper. He would have a prominent place at the table with a cloth napkin by his plate. I am sure there were many nights when Aunt Glo did not want to put on a meal, but she did for her Father. And when my family was in town invariably we were invited over for at least one meal. We were amazed at how she could effortlessly put on a delicious meal with ample amounts of food and large amounts of her mouth watering gravy.
I can only imagine the cries of joy in heaven from her family and friends as she fell asleep here on earth and woke up there to join them. Thank you Lord for blessing us with Aunt Glo for all of these years.
It goes without saying, but I’ll speak for all Marshalls. We were heartbroken to hear of the passing of your beloved Mom. God must have needed another angel, or, perhaps more importantly, another iconic Immaculate Conception School & Parish graduate, mother and parent. One of the “Last of a Breed”. Legendary. A first ballot Hall of Famer. She will always be “Mrs. Fagan” to us, even when she insisted you call her Gloria. We didn’t. We wouldn’t. So much respect. As you mourn her passing, and the tears subside, you can begin to plan the celebration of her life, a life well lived. We will be forever grateful to have called her a friend, neighbor and the Fagans’ Mom. May God be with you and your families, especially in the coming weeks.
Sending our condolences and prayers to all of the Fagan & Maher families as you honor Gloria’s beautiful life this week

With sincere sympathy, The Mills family.
Aunt Gloria, You are the definition of MOTHER. You nurtured such an amazing family. You were just plain NICE! Heres to a life well lived. !
Our sympathy to the Don and Gloria Fagan family. Had computer glitches but will try to post this again. We want to add to that beautiful obituary that to us who attended Immaculate Conception High School, Don and Gloria were wonderful schoolmates – even when they were initiating us Freshmen. It was a small school by today’s standards and all the families blended easily into one community – and kept bonded by the all-school reunions. Our siblings were classmates – Kay Engler Walsh and Gloria – Gerald “Jerry” Nilles and John Maher. Jim was a class behind us. That meant life-long friends – catching up on family news when we’d see each other. Gloria was good at keeping connections. At 2 months old, Carol moved into the house that Don and Gloria later bought from her parents and it was a well-kept home even with 9 kids. And it was Gloria that made us feel secure in buying a condo in her building – sight unseen – from California and, thankfully, she vouched for our good character. Your beautiful description of your mother is “spot-on”. We love her and will miss her and, sorry to say we will not be able to attend her funeral service. We have been in California the last two months to clean out and sell Bob’s house. Thank you for providing a live-stream service.
Our condolences to the entire Fagan family. We’re thinking of all of you as you honor your mom’s wonderful life. Rest In Peace Gloria
We are thinking of you.

Just wanted to pay my respects to a kind a gracious lady who raised a truly wonderful family and helped to raise many more in the Regis community. My deepest condolences to the entire Fagan family. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Fagan but per her touching obituary I have no doubt she was a “true gem.” It shows in her children who are true gems as well. What a lasting legacy of love she leaves behind.
