Darrell Alfred Reid, 82 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass, 10:30 a.m., Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Mechanicsville. Darrell's viewing and visitation will be Thursday, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel, where the Wake Service begins at 7:00 p.m. Private family burial, Saturday, in Rose Hill Cemetery. Surviving Darrell are two sisters: Marilyn Rekemeyer, Mechanicsville and Eunice (William) Mahalic of Wichita, Kansas, three nephews: Michael (Vivian) Rekemeyer, Tipton, Steven Rekemeyer, Middle Amana, Mark (Becky) Mahalic, Westminster, Colorado, and two nieces, Margo Landis, Rose Hill, Kansas and Melissa Gandy, Bluff City, Kansas. Darrell is also survived by many great nieces and nephews. Preceding Darrell in death were his parents Adelbert and Bertha Marie Fisher Reid, two brothers: Charles and John; two sisters: Theresa and Alberta Reid, and a brother-in-law Dale Rekemeyer. Darrell was born July 29, 1927 in Mechanicsville. He graduated from Mechanicsville High School and served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Darrell farmed the family farm, before retiring to Cedar Rapids in 1988. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he sang in the church choir and for many funerals and weddings. Darrell will be remembered for his Black Angus cattle and bulls, unfailing memory, their beautiful Peacocks, and the Christmas decorations and lighting displays. A memorial fund has been established.
