Alvin P. Krebs, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully among family at Mercy Medical Center on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Funeral Services: 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Steve Knudson. Military honors by: American Legion Post #727. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Ann Krebs; his daughters, Jacqueline Wilhelm and Wendy (Dean) Scheer; his sons, Steve (Diane) Krebs and Brian Krebs; two grandchildren, Michael Wilhelm and Susan (Jon) Hickey; and four great grandchildren, Michael and Alyn Redlinger and Alison and Andrew Hickey. Alvin was born July 24, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Carl and Lydia (Troester) Krebs. He attended Edgewood School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936. Alvin joined the US Marine Corps in 1942, although he was honorably discharged due to complications from rheumatic fever and not able to join his platoon in combat in the Pacific. He married Ruth Ann Stout on May 1, 1943, in Iowa City. Together they, along with son, Brian, daughter-in-law, Diane, and other family members were the third generation of Krebs' Greenhouse, which began business as Rose Hill Gardens in 1874. Their hard work and dedication to the family business touched the community for many decades, until closing in 2003. Alvin's long rows of carefully grown carnations and snapdragons were a sight to behold. As he would step back from a completed floral arrangement, he always seemed to decide there was room for a couple extra carnations. Alvin also loved aviation, and soloed as a pilot. He was member of First Lutheran Church. A life-long golf fan, we know he is now at peace, watching a match, and hoping for another victory from Phil or Zach. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Krebs; sister, Eloise Jones; daughter, Paula Krebs; son-in-law, Gordon Wilhelm; and granddaughters, Bethany Redlinger and Sarah Wilhelm. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
RIP Dearest Alvin. I will forever remember the most fragerant Carnations, my Favorites Red, White, and peppermint. and wonderful snapdragons. Retired Florist living in Minnesota Home town Cedar Rapids. My thoughts and prayer are with the Family.
Mrs. Krebs and Family- I grew up on 18th street and remember riding my bike to your flower shop many times! Mr. Krebs was always so nice, letting us neighborhood kids walk through the buildings and look at all the flowers! He will be missed!
Alvin’s bouquets made my wife envied at Wilson School when they were delivered there. I just told him how much I wanted to spend, and he always created something beautiful.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of Mr. (Alvin) Krebs and offer words of encouragement at this most difficult time. His son Steve was such a dear friend to me in high school and I have many fond memories of his father, Steve and the entire Krebs family. Mr. (Alvin) Krebs included me on a flight with Steve and that was a special moment in my life. You could understand why he enjoyed flying. He was a hard working man that demonstrated the importance of providing for his family. My God comfort the Krebs family. Please know that you are in our prayers. Sincerely,
