Thomas “Tom” Edward McMahon, 79 of Mount Vernon, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026, at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday September 18, 2026, from 5:30-7:00 pm, with a rosary recited at 5:00 pm, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services in Mount Vernon. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday September 19, 2026, at 10:30 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Burial will be held at a later date. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services of Mount Vernon is assisting with the arrangements.
Tom was born on April 15, 1947, in Oelwein, Iowa to Emmett and Mina (Odekirk) McMahon. He attended and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Oelwein. He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Feldman on April 24, 1976, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.
Tom proudly served in the United States Army from 1966-1969 and was stationed in Vietnam during the Tet offensive. A highlight of his military career was being selected for the helicopter flight team that accompanied General Omar Bradley to France for the 25th anniversary of D-Day, an experience he would carry with him throughout his life.
For 47 years, Tom worked as a heavy truck mechanic for Hawkeye International Trucks. A career that reflected his hardworking nature and ability to fix just about anything. Outside of work, Tom found joy in life’s simple things. He loved fishing, hunting, reading, woodworking, camping at Swiss Valley Campground, tinkering and fixing things. Paramount to all of this, Tom found the most pleasure and enjoyment in spending time with his family and friends in addition to making new friends anywhere he could. He loved a good chat with just about anyone.
Tom will be remembered for how generously he shared his time, talents and love with those around him. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be cherished by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by his family and those who knew and loved him. His memory will live on through the lessons he taught and moments spent together.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife Gwendolyn McMahon; three daughters, Christina McMahon-Osborn, Cynthia (Andrew) Dunham, and Carrie (John) Cockrell; eight grandchildren Hannah, William, Dylan and Cadence Osborn, Owen and Adelyn Dunham, Hayden and Alayna Pumphrey; great-grandson Samuel; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael McMahon; sister, Mary McMahon; father-in-law, Ralph Feldman; mother-in-law, Dorothy Feldman; brother-in-law, James Gardner; and niece, Kim Kempf.
Memorials in Tom’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
