Vern was born on October 6, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Marie (Elias) Havlik. He attended Van Buren and graduated from Wilson High School in 1946. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marines, serving at the end of World War II. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Cedar Rapids. On June 17, 1950, he married Helen Althaus. They were married 66 years before Helen passed away in 2017.

The family extends a sincere thank you to the staff and nurses with Hospice of Mercy, especially Jim, Cathi, Kelly, and Joe, and the staff at Prairie Hills, in particular Mark, Mildred, and the entire kitchen crew who kept Vern happy and fed!

Such good memories of my time as a child visiting the Havlik home and playing with the kids. Vern was such a calming presence. I know my folks enjoyed the friendship with their family and I remember his mother as a good friend of my Grandma Julia. Still have a pic of the two of them.
He is with dad fishing and drinking coffee with each other and he is reunited with his wife and not in any pain he will be missed
