Will Patrick Daugherty, 31, left planet Earth on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at University of Iowa Hospital, surrounded by his family. He left bravely.
Will was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on April 21, 1994, to Deborah Covington Daugherty and Timothy Daugherty. He is named after his beloved grandfather, Willis Daugherty, who was a great influence on Will. He is survived by his mother, Deborah Covington Daugherty; father and stepmother, Timothy and Carolyn Daugherty; and brother and sister-in-law, Chad and Kerry Covington.
Though he seemingly lived a short life, Will was an old soul who came to us so that we could know the deepest love and unconditional acceptance. While he had much struggle from his teen years on, Will’s nature was to be steadfastly gentle, kind and loving. His distinct handprint will eternally remain in the hearts of those who greatly love him.
Will had a wicked sense of humor. He was smart. He was infinitely curious and loved studying World War II history, global culture, and the cosmos. Will wrote profusely—journaling his life experience and writing poetry and fiction. His go-to hobbies were role-playing games, table-top gaming, and video games.
He adored being with cats and dogs, which brought him great joy. In Will’s memory, charitable donations may be made to Dogs Forever in Cedar Rapids.
Will always enjoyed being with his best friend, Claire Nilles. He was devoted to his mom. Will was exceptionally connected to his brother and had an extraordinary relationship with his sister-in-law.
Good-byes are the hardest when the story feels unfinished. We will profoundly miss Will for all time. He has forever changed those who love him.
A private Celebration of Life will take place at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
