Bernard Westbrock

Bernard Anton Westbrock, 94, of Marion, Iowa, passed on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha, Iowa. Bernie had resided at the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon, Iowa. Visitation: 4-7:00 p.m., Monday, January 13, 2025, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2025, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. (located at 995 5th Avenue) with visitation one hour prior. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Bernie was born January 25, 1930, to Al and Regina (Schultingkemper) Westbrock in Dakota Township, Todd County, Minnesota. He graduated from Sauk Center High School, in Minnesota in 1948 (where he participated in football and band). Following graduation, he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and worked for the Sisters of Mercy on their farm (Mound Farm) currently known as Mt. Mercy University. In 1952 he started his own construction company, B.A., Westbrock Construction. Inc. Over the course of the next 32 years, he built over 50 homes in the Marion area, the Marion Fire Station #3, (600 8th Avenue), remodeled the Men's Reformatory in Anamosa, Iowa, and numerous other buildings in East Central Iowa. After moving to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1984, Bernie owned and operated a gas station, a pay phone business, and managed three rental properties. On April 28, 1956, he married Doris Huerter. This union would span 58 years until Doris' death in 2014. Bernie was a member of the Marion Volunteer Fire Department (1953 to 1984). Bernie and Doris were members of St. Joseph's Catholic church for 24 years and members of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Phoenix, Arizona, for 30 years. Bernie served as an usher for both congregations. While a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church he was instrumental in the planning for the new Catholic Church (1790 14th Street in Marion). He also co-organized and managed the Church's fundraising event, "Fun Days". Bernie was a member (and President) of the Marion Home Builders Association and the Knights of Columbus. Bernie is survived by his two daughters; Nancy O'Connell and Norma; one grandson, Joshua O'Connell; two great-grandchildren, Abagael and Cohlten O'Connell; three brothers, Don Orlando, Florida, Jack (Felisha), Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Vern (Bridget), Rochester, Minnesota; sister, Janet (John) Murch, Sauk Centre, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Gene (Gail) Huerter, Pella, Iowa; sister-in-law's, Arlene (Al) Hlas, Puyallup. Washington, Mary Thielen, Nashville, Tennessee, and Diane Clark, Cedar Rapids; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his parents, brother, Charles; sister-in-law's, Lou Westbrock, and Bertha Rahe; and brother-in-law's, Melvin and Ken Huerter. Donations can be made to the Oldorf Hospice House (in Hiawatha, Iowa) and the Alzheimer's Association.

  2. I worked with Bernie the summer I graduated from MHS and I’ll never what a hard worker Bernie was. He was a human nail gunner, not yet invented.

  3. Bernie took me under his wing right out of high school. He showed me everything from carpentry to concrete work. I also learned how to run , backhoe’s, fork lifts and dump trucks. All before I was 21. A lifetime of new skills in a few years.
