George Leo Holmes, 66, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed peacefully on November 15, 2024. Visitation: 3:00-5:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Mass: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2024, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. George graduated from LaSalle High School and Mount Mercy College. In his younger years, he was active in football, and baseball, and was always a Cubs fan. He was a voice for accessibility for those with disabilities. George is survived by his siblings, William Holmes, David (Marilyn) Holmes, Joseph Holmes, Francis Holmes, Mary (Roger) Roff, Therese (David) Wirtz, and Christina (Cody Wade) Holmes; sister-in-law, Rita Holmes; and brother-in-law, Thomas (Amber) VanDeusen. George was preceded in death by his parents, William and Agnes (Ryan) Holmes; brothers, Harry and Patrick Holmes; and sisters, Kathryn VanDeusen and Dorothy Holmes. Memorials may be made to the Willis Dady Homeless Shelter. The Holmes family wishes to thank all medical personnel who contributed to his life over many years, and to his long-time caregiver Kristie Solomon and son Caleb for the significant contributions to his life, they are and always will be his family.   2. George was a year ahead of me at LaSalle. I remember him as a nice and polite guy. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. God bless his loved ones, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

Met George when we played Cedar Rapids Kids League Baseball for 12 and 13 year olds at Cleveland Park,we played for Erusha Reality he was a great teammate we went 11 and 1 that year later went to School with him at LaSalle, he was a great guy with a positive attitude and always kind, My Condolences to his Family, God Bless!

  4. Oh how he will be missed by so many,I was his aide from to the rescue for about 4 years he made me fill at home when I worked for him telling me storys about his tombstone pizza traveling days to his loving the Lord!! George Holmes I will miss you!!

    You were inspiring to all who witnessed how you lived your life with acceptance and purpose.
    We have fond memories working together with you, Kristie, Caleb and Jeff to plan & build the first handicapped Habitat Home in Cedar Rapids – to afford you a life of personal freedom.
