Our beautiful and sassy mother, MaryAlice Caraway, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at age 74. Her spirit is carried on by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, nephews and many friends.
She was born January 30, 1948, in Lisbon, Iowa, to Dannie and Inez (Yocum) Caraway. A lifelong resident of Lisbon, MaryAlice attended Lisbon Community School. After high school, she raised her four daughters and as much as she loved being a mother, her most cherished title was Nana. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
MaryAlice was a devoted CNA at Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, for over thirty years, retiring in 2015. She touched the lives of many co-workers, patients and their families and in return they touched hers.
MaryAlice leaves behind her daughters, Julie (Andy) Caspers, Jane (Thad) Nevitt, Angela (John Hackenmiller) Achenbach, and Lindsay (Matt) Welsh; grandchildren, Ally (Ethan) Kamerling, Addie Caspers, Benjamin Nevitt, Lauren Nevitt, Josephine (Logan) Loftus, Brody Achenbach, Talia Hackenmiller, Brynn Hackenmiller, Sawyer and Finnegan Welsh; great-grandchildren, Easton and Elijah Kamerling; her brother, Robert (Diane) Caraway; nephews Dan and Rob Caraway; dear friend and caregiver, Sue Skoff.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Dannie and Inez Caraway and an infant son, Marcus Allen Skinner.
Visitation will be held at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, 715 10th Avenue SW, Mount Vernon, Iowa, on Friday, March 4, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 10 a.m. There will be a private family burial following the funeral at the Lisbon Cemetery.
Those unable to attend are invited to watch the service via livestream. Please find the livestream link on MaryAlice's Tribute Wall.
Memorials may be directed to the family with a portion going to Cyclops 109 American Legion Auxiliary.
And so the story goes on until we see our mom and Nana again. We love and miss you. We will stand taller, stronger and together knowing you are now watching over us.
We are deeply sorry for your loss ~ Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services – Mount Vernon
I worked with Mary Alice at Hallmark Care Center many years ago. She was always so kind to the residents and to shy teenage me. My sympathy to her family.
My childhood memories include many fond ones of Mary. I spent a lot of time at her house with her daughter Julie, and Mary was like a second mom to me. I didn’t see her in her later years but will always hold these precious memories close to my heart. Prayers for her children and family, for comfort and strength at this very difficult time. Absolutely beautiful soul . Loved talking to her on the phone when I was a pharmacy technician in Mount Vernon. I would answer, she would always say thank God it’s you! What a grand lady. You will truly be missed
Love the picture! This is how I remember her….always with a smile and a hug!
With our deepest sympathy, With loving memories of “Mary Alice”
Mary and I were friends from the first time we meet in 6th grade. Not many people are born with the spirit of Genuine JOY and HAPPINESS that filled Marys life, as well as those around her. We still reminisced about the fun we had as sewing partners in Mrs. Young’s class. Up until just a few months ago, four of us from the Class of ‘66 enjoyed frequent lunches out together. Mary’s friendship will leave lasting, treasured memories in each of us who knew, and loved her.❤️
Lindsay, Matt, Sawyer and Finn, We are thinking of you all. Mary was special to us all.
Our deepest sympathy to all of you at this very difficult time❤️🙏🏻 Don and Carol Jilovec
it is so hard to grip that my bestie is gone. but never gone from my heart and soul. she would always make me laugh so hard to where I had tears asking her where she came up with her slangs. I met Mary Alice while working ai Hallmark and thats when we became friends forever.
My deepest sympathy to all of you! I know how much you loved your mom and how much she loved each and everyone of you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers! Hugs!
It is so hard for me to grip that my bestie is gone, but I will always still talk to you Mary Alice when I need a good laugh. So many times I would call you and out of the blue, and would laugh so hard that I had tears telling you I need to write down your stories, and jokes. You will always be in my heart and soul. Your friend Sue
My very first friend when I moved to Lisbon. Spent countless hours at her home. She was the most fun to be around and had that sparkle in her eye that made her a joy . I will not ever forget Mary Alice. I am so glad to have known her
I don’t believe I ever saw Mary Alice without a smile on her face or when she wasn’t laughing, I can still hear her laugh. I remember the night many years ago when Mary Alice, Marcia, Tami, Lynette and I got a limo and went out to look at Christmas lights. A night to never forget, we all laughed so hard and had so much fun. She is full of so many fun memories and she was loved by so many, she will be missed. Hugs to you all and my sympathy, Annamae Baker
