Alan "Al" Leon Stiers, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021.
A joint Celebration of Life for both Al and his oldest son Steve will be held from 1-4 pm Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Lovely Lane Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
Al was born in Nemaha county, Neb., to Ralph and Martha (Bates) Stiers. He attended a one room school till the family moved to Nemaha city where he finished high school. Al attended Peru State College earining a degree in Industrial Arts and Education, he received his Master's in Education from the University of South Dakota. Al coached and taught in Johnson, Neb., and Sac City, Iowa. Al moved to Cedar Rapids in 1967 where he taught at Adams Elementary and coached and taught at Kennedy High School, retiring in 1996. July 24, 1955, he married is high school sweetheart, Twila Mae Holmes, and they had three sons. He attended the Drake Relays, even after retirement and kept busy with his beautiful custom woodworking, he was a very skilled craftsman. He was a wonderful husband, dad, friend, coach, mentor and beloved member of Lovely Lane Methodist Church.
He is survived by wife, Twila Mae (Holmes); sons, Scott (Melissa) and Brent (Elizabeth) of Danville, Ind.; grandchildren, Emily, Adam, Sam and Sarah Beth; and great-grandchildren, Anabelle Stiers and Ivo Pedder.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steve; siblings, Ryha, Betty, William and Roland.
