Shirley Gibson Luter, 72, of Cedar Rapids, went home Sunday, September 19, 2021, surrounded by family. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Survivors include her husband, Cleo Luter; children, Rahmal, Jessica, Andrew, and Destanie Gibson; granddaughter, Anya Gibson; siblings, Michael Gibson, Peter Robinson, Julie Robinson, Raymond Ford, Craig Shaw, Linda Shaw, Solomon Bostwick, and Philip Hall; a host of nieces and nephews including special nieces, Monea Diaz-Pledge, Montine Leach, and Jonea Pledge and special nephew, Jeremiah Gibson; special dear friend, Louella Diaz; and extended family who she loved. Shirley Lee Gibson was born November 1, 1948, to Melvin and Maggie (Mays) Gibson, in Thornton, Arkansas. She graduated from George Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1967. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in telecommunications at MCI. Shirley also graduated from Caroline Leonetti Modeling School. She loved to read the newspaper, cater to her plants, babysit, and go shopping. She was a family-oriented person. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Maggie Gibson; aunt, Maybelle Mays; brothers, Melvin, Jackie, and Jeffery Gibson; nephews Jack and Justin Gibson.

  3. So very sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. She was my supervisor for quite some time at MCI back in the early 90s. Shirley was a very well respected and amazing leader, mentor and such a genuine person. She always presented herself with such poise, confidence and compassion too. Prayers to all of her family.
