Stephen Weable, 78, of Marion, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, with his wife of 60 years by his side. Steve lost his battle with lung cancer after a valiant struggle, indicative of the strength and fortitude with which he faced all of life's challenges. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Marion, is caring for Steve and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne; children, Trent (Beverly) of Berwyn, Illinois, and Wade (Tara Miller) of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Cody and Courtney Miller; great-granddaughter, Nyx; siblings, Suzanne Lentner of Florida, and Denny of Arizona; three nieces and nephews; and many extended family and friends.
Stephen Sires Weable was the first baby born in 1942 on January 1st in Webster City, Iowa, to Duane and Maxiene (Sires) Weable. The family later moved to Cedar Rapids, where he attended Kennedy High School. Stephen was a classmate to Suzanne Elyea, and they were married on April 16, 1960, in Cedar Rapids.
Steve's wife describes her husband as strong, artistic, and courageous. He exhibited these characteristics in his chosen career as a Cedar Rapids firefighter from 1969 until 1994. He did hand lettering on the fire trucks in addition to being an active firefighter. An article in the Cedar Rapids Gazette shows him manning a hose in January of 1977 fighting a fire from atop the towers at Quaker Oats. Steve was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, and was especially skilled at trap shooting. He worked hard in all aspects of his life and Steve's sons benefitted from having a father who raised them well and taught them to fish and do woodworking. Steve and Sue ran the Remember When Antiques Shop in Marion for the past 20 years and enjoyed going to estate sales to stock the shop.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents.

Dear Sue, Trent, Wade and the Weable family: I am very sorry to hear about Steve’s passing. As a boy on Boxwood Lane I fondly remember hearing Steve’s stories of fighting fires during play time with Trent and Wade. Those were good times, for sure. You have my deepest condolences for your loss, however I find joy in the wonderful legacy Steve left for us. Peace and Blessings, Jay Cooper Pasadena, CA
Sue, Wade, Trent, and family, Emma and I were sad to see Steve had passed . This seemed to be so fast we can only have memories. Steve was a great person to be a friend. We enjoyed Gunshows, sales, and antiques with him. He was very knowledgeable in his civil war and sportsman’s collectibles. Thanks Steve for being our friend. We will surely miss you and your friendship.
Dear Sue, Wade, Trent and family: Sandy and I were so sad to hear about Steve’s passing. Here is just a few of the fond memories I have of Steve. We went to Elkader to enter a canoe race in the two man kayak division. We were using a borrowed boat that you had to put together. We had no idea how it went together. Everyone was laughing at us until we won and brought the trophy home. He painted several helmets for me and would let me use his brushes if I wanted to add something. We would go duck hunting together and one time we separated and when we later met, each of us had shot each others limit. So we walked out hiding three limits in our wader and everywhere else we could stuff a duck. It wasn’t much fun pheasant hunting with him, he would get his gun up and hit the bird before I could get my safety off. We were like the dogs for him. We thought we were so good at canoe racing we entered a 30 mile canoe race down the Cedar River. That is the dumbest thing we ever did. We used to shot bottle rockets at the Linn County Jail from Old Central Fire Station until the deputies put the end to it. These are just some of the things I remember about Steve. I never saw him get mad at anyone and never heard him raise his voice at anyone. Great friend and a wonderful example of a man. Proud to have him as a friend and be a part of my life. We will miss him. Sandy and Steve Tomash
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, we’ll always be friends. -Sandy and Leroy Colbert
Sue, I was so shocked and saddened to read of Steve’s passing. I always enjoyed my visits with both of you when our paths would cross at the garage and estate sales. I’ll miss his humor and insight, and my thoughts are with you and your family. Rosie Hilliard
So sorry Sue. We were shocked and saddened to learn of Steve’s passing and pray he didn’t suffer long. He was really a good guy, hard working, and nice neighbor. He will be missed. If we can be of help to you please let us know.
My brother excelled at anything he tried in his life. Hunting, Fishing, Art, Basketball, Old English Lettering Of City Vehicles In Gold Leaf, Kayak Racing, Trap Shooting, Antique Restoration, Crafted A Canoe, Expert Appraiser of Antiques, Gun And Fishing Collector, Civil War Historian, Courageous Firefighter, Male Model, Hard Worker. He had a great sense/of humor and loved people. God gifted Steve in all of this but most impressive of all was his deep devotion and care of his family. He was my hero. Denny and Donna will miss you so much.
Sue and family you have my deepest condolences. I will miss the good times we had shooting over the last twenty years or so. Always a smile on his face unless he wasn’t shooting well and that didn’t happen very often! We had known each other for several years when it was realized he had served on the Fire Department with some of my relation. What a great sportsman and individual Steve was and I will be forever proud to call him my friend. Jim Simon Center Point
I too am sorry for his family’s loss. I knew and well remember Steve. We spent a a lot of time together for a couple of years as kids as we were back yard neighbors. Same for his mom and dad , brother too. I am not surprised at his artistry. We rode bikes together a lot. He rebuilt/restored an English style single speed bike. After spray painting it black, Steve hand pinstriped the whole bike, much like the hot rods of those years were pinstriped. It was stunning! I can still hear the sound of his voice. He drew me a picture of the “One Eyed One Horned Flying Purplr People Eater”, so creative. Dennis, if you read this , I well remember you also and still vividly recall your mom telling me about your terrible car accident. I am so sorry for your loss. We lived behind you , 2 houses to the west, when you lived on Reynolds Avenue.
