Gloria Odekirk

June 4, 1949 ~ June 12, 2018

Gloria Jean Odekirk, '68 plus I owe you one', of Cedar Rapids, joined her Lord on June 12, 2018, after struggling with health issues and an aggressive onset of COPD. Prayers and kind thoughts are greatly appreciated. Gloria was born June 4, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, and grew up taking care of herself and others. It is with this love she carried throughout life, always wrapping her arms around others, taking care to be sure they had what they needed, at all times. She was a selfless person who put others' happiness first. A good cook, grocery store trips were always delightful, especially with tacos on the menu, and her famous potato salad. She was a pistol with energy, spirit, and stubborn resolve. She spoke her mind, and showed us the importance of an Iowan's work ethic to achieve your goals. Once Gloria set her mind to something, you could consider it done, from finding her beautiful daughter after years of searching, to making a perfect quilt for Kent. Gloria graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1966. Upon graduation, Gloria was anxious to begin her career, and started as a cosmetologist. She worked hard to provide for her family, and transitioned her career to Farmstead Foods. She later joined a car dealership in Center Point which offered her transportation when the kids were young, she was their successful finance manager. She won numerous awards, and achieved top salesperson of the month by selling 37 cars, more than anyone had sold at the time. When she was offered an opportunity to buy into a business, she took the risk and headed to Fountain Hills, Arizona to open a bar and restaurant with Kent. Gloria always excelled in meeting business demands while balancing a household of active children. She simply 'figured it out.' Her favorite saying to those she treasured, especially her children and grandchildren, was 'Love you to the Moon & Back.' Her love never waned, even throughout trials and tribulations. Grit, determination, and tenacity were traits unmatched to any that knew her. Her favorite places were Walmart, the Post Office, the Casino, and anywhere she could sing karaoke. Gloria is survived by her husband of 40 years, Kent Gordon Odekirk; their eight children, Donald D. Craig (Jessica) of Victor, Iowa, Samantha F. (DeeDee) Evens of Los Angeles, James P. Craig of Media, Pennsylvania, Michelle D. (Brad) Owens of Central City, Mary J. (Francisco) Barrera of Cedar Rapids, Kurtis G. Odekirk of Palo, Katrina A. (Todd) Roalson of Mesa, Arizona, and Robert K. Odekirk of Cedar Rapids; 17 grandchildren, Kelsey Kay Jean Craig, Brandon Zeadow, James Craig, Kyleigha 'KK' and Cory Levine, Taylor Evens, Rylee, Blair and Evah Owens, Jessica Robertson, Derrick Steger, Marcela Billmeyer, Jacob and Alfonso Barrera, Shelby Miller, Kandace Odekirk, and Allie Rose (Kyle Goldberg) Dake; three great-grandchildren, Anthony and Vanessa Billmeyer, Aryia (Rosie) Barrera, and baby boy Miller on the way; siblings, Steve Andrews, Carole Stickley, Cathy Jo Monroe, Johnny Berge, and Scott Middleton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joyce and Scotty Middleton; father, Donald Andrews; sister, Trish Andrews; brother, Gary Andrews; beloved great-grandson, Zane Zeadow; and very dear friends that mom took in and cared for during their last years of life which include Cindy K, Maybelle, and Jim and Joan Wilcox. 'Love you to the Moon & Back. See you in Heaven!' ~ Glo

  4. Gloria’s family, I am sorry for you loss of your mother and a special friend. Gloria was a good friend. Though we reconnected several years ago I know she was busy with her family. I still had the opportunity to visit a few times over the last few years. When I was 16, this was the first time I met Gloria. She worked at Taco Grande and was a Beautician. I was somewhat lost in my teens trying to find my way to adulthood. I am from a big family. Gloria was like an older sister and a close friend that I did not have. She accepted me and allowed my unannounced visits. She was a person I could go to and just have quiet time or company time. She did not put expectations on me. She took me to the bars when I turned 18, legal age at that time. I met Gloria at least 42 years ago. I spent time with Gloria and young Donnie. Had an Adventure land trip with her too. Though Gloria is gone now she will forever hold a place in my heart. I thank her for being there when I needed a friend.

  5. Heaven gained a special angel! What a sweet lady. I am glad I got to know her for a short time! My thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones!

    • Thank you so much for your message. It was wonderful to see Great Uncle Burton on Saturday. Love, Katrina

  7. I met Gloria in 1968 when I was looking at an apartment to move into. Walking back to my car I noticed I had a flat tire. Several people were outside and a guy stationed at Luke Air Force Base changed my tire. That’s the day I met Gloria. She was holding Jimmy, he was just an infant, and she walked down to see what all the commotion was about. That was the beginning of a 50 year friendship. We just clicked. My husband and I lived in the apartments for a short time and then we moved into a house. Shortly after that, John and Gloria moved into a house not too far away. We were always at each other‘s houses. We would play cards quite often and John and my husband, Dennis, would more often than not fall asleep-sitting up- as we were playing. Well you can just imagine what we were saying to each other, rolling our 👀 eyes and shaking our heads. The next time we moved John and Gloria moved to the same place directly across the street. My husband and I had the honor of becoming Mary’s godparents. She got my middle name, Jane, which I know she doesn’t like but she is stuck with it. I remember the day they left to move back to Iowa. She was driving I remember it like it was yesterday. I was crying as I am doing now. She was the best friend a person could ask for and I loved her with all my heart. At least I know she is in no pain and not suffering emotionally or physically. I’ll meet you on the other side, Gloria Jean. With all my love, Beverly Jane your BFF

    • Bev, what a beautiful tribute. I love the rolling eyes comment as I can see her so clearly doing this. She had some wonderful, life long friends- thank you for always being there for her. I am grateful her tears are now a forever smile. Love, Michelle
