Janet Nadine Cook, 85, of Lisbon, formerly of Mechanicsville, died peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018, at the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon. Visitation: 4-6 pm on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Burial: 1 pm Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.
She is survived by her children, Mark (Jo Ellen) Cook of Mechanicsville and Debra Cook of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Janelle (Kurt) Schnoebelen of Riverside, and Nate Cook of Land O Lakes, Florida; great-grandchildren, Korbin, Jack, and Hudson Schnoebelen; brother, John 'Jack' Williams of Clarence; sister-in-law, Arlene Svoboda of Mechanicsville; and many nieces and nephews.
Janet was born in rural Cedar County to Neil and Margaret (Spencer) Williams on September 29, 1932. She graduated from Mechanicsville Community School before going on to Pairs Beauty School where she graduated from in 1951. Janet worked as a beautician in Lisbon and Mechanicsville before opening her own shop in Mechanicsville. She married Lowell 'Cookie' Cook on May 25, 1952, at the Methodist Church in Mechanicsville where the couple made their home and raised their family. Janet was a loving grandmother and helped care for her grandchildren daily as youngsters.
Janet and Lowell enjoyed many years of camping with family and their Mechanicsville Fire Department friends. They shared many memories going to Fire Conventions across the state. She also enjoyed gardening with her daughter-in-law and canning their produce. Janet was an avid reader, loved to fish, and, in recent years, enjoyed adult coloring, accumulating files of beautifully colored prints.
Following the death of her husband of 47 years, Janet moved to Five Seasons Senior Housing, Cedar Rapids. There, she made many new friends, including special friend Nadine. She enjoyed playing cards and dominos, card making, and other activities. She spent several years volunteering at Mercy Medical Center, again making new friends, including special friend Vivian. They enjoyed time spent swimming and traveling. After dealing with several chronic health issues, Janet moved to the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon in late fall of 2017.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the many caregivers at Mercy Cardiology Clinic, Wound Healing Center, and Mercy Medical Center, especially those on Zone 91 who most often cared for her. And, to everyone at Rehabilitation Care Center of Lisbon, thank you for the kind and compassionate care.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister-in-law, Chris Williams.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Mercy Medical Foundation, Cedar Rapids.
We will miss her smile, laughter, and sense of humor.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Your mother always had a big smile on her face. May the memories you shared in life help ease the pain you are feeling in your hearts. Rejoice, the Williams cousins, aunts and uncles, parents and friends are reuniting in Heaven. Jean (Williams) Johnson & family
My sympathy and prayers. Blessings to the family during this difficult time.
To the family, especially Mark, JoEllen, Jack and Arlene, we go back a long time with many memories. We are sorry to be so far away as we would want to be there for you. Thinking of you all during this difficult time. Friends forever, Tom and Elaine Ferguson
