He served in the Pacific during World War II. After returning home, he married Ferne Farrington in Marion, Iowa, on January 1, 1947. She died in 2006. Chester and Ferne farmed in Cedar County their entire lives. Chester was passionate about farming and had a special knack for welding. He enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and rarely lost a game of Carroms. Chester never knew a stranger and loved to visit. He especially liked to tell stories from his time in the service. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ferne; and four sisters, Helen Cummins, Esther Brown, Anna Brown, and Lona Scott. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Spirit of Faith Family Church, designated for Ike Akabogu Ministries, which is a church plant of Spirit of Faith Family Church in Abuja, Nigeria.

  1. I have many memories of Chester over the years but mainly they all center around his kindness and sense of humor. His smile. The way he could light up a room just by walking into it and be friends with everyone. I remember his love for farming and how proud he was of his Granddaughters. Dont remember ever seeing someone love someone so much as he loved his wife. He was as kind as they come and he just made you feel. good by being around him. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. ♡ Denise Dykstra
