Bonnie Hutchcroft

August 3, 1925 ~ July 17, 2016

Bonnie Hutchcroft, 90, lifetime resident of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Steve Garner. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Bonnie was born on August 3, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Fred and Birdie (Trimble) Oliphant. She graduated in 1944 from Franklin High School. Bonnie waited patiently for the love of her life, Junior Hutchcroft to get back from World War II, and married him on April 22, 1946, at St. Matthew's. They were blessed with seven children, Jay (Sandy), Jack, Mary DeShaw, Julie, Joe (Lorri), Susanne (Randy) Pierce, and Laureen (Kasey) Regan. She was also blessed with 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters, Linda Hughes and Judie (DeWayne) Leidigh, many nieces and nephews; and many 'adopted' children and grandchildren through the years. Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Junior; daughter, Julie; parents; two brothers; three sisters; a son-in-law; and two grandchildren. In addition to raising her seven children (who by the way, adored this queen beyond words) she worked for Mercy Hospital for 17 years, first as a housekeeper then going back to school to get her degree as an EKG technician. Can you say 'overachiever'? She retired in 1989, and spent the rest of her life dedicating every minute to her family. The love she poured into trips to the park, her delicious cooking, and family gatherings will forever keep us smiling. She did not care who walked through her door, she loved them, hugged them and would give them that smile that melted you. Then, she would ask if they were hungry! God will welcome this dynamic woman into His kingdom. We will let her go for now. 'See you later, alligator'. A special thank you to her loving caregivers: Mackenzie aka Margarita, Kelly, Michelle, and Beverly (from LMC), and Cindy Nicely and all of the workers and volunteers at the Oldorf Hospice House. Instead of flowers, please send memorials to the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

  1. I’m so honored to have been your blonde, “adopted” daughter. You welcomed me anytime into your home from the time I was just 6 years old. You loved me, fed me and shared your cooking tips with me. I’m so happy that God blessed me with you and your wonderful family. Love you and I’ll miss ya!

  2. I first met Bonnie at Mercy many years ago when I was a student at Kirkwood. I got assigned to Mercy for my clinicals and she taught me how to do EKGs. She did a great job training me as I am still at Mercy doing EKGs 33 years later. I am so sorry for your families loss and I will keep you all in my prayers.
