LeAnn G. Viter, 63, of Mount Vernon died on Monday, June 22, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 -7 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon (formerly Morgan's).
Survivors include her husband, Gary; daughters, Stephanie Viter of Mount Vernon, and Brandi (Lee Pitlik) Viter-Pitlik of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Benjamin Hopkins; sister, Karen (Daryl) Annis of Troy Mills; special friends, Cindy Bowers, Rick Onstott, Donna Jo Elsner and the 'oldies' from St. Luke's; mother-in-law, Mary Viter; sisters-in-law, Cindy (Paula Calmer) Viter and Marsha (John) Heims; many nieces and nephews; and her special pet, Rosie.
LeAnn was born in Cedar Rapids on March 21, 1952, the daughter of Mike and Lucille Oliphant. She graduated from North Linn High School in 1970. On June 5, 1971, she married Gary Viter in Troy Mills. LeAnn went on to earn her LPN from St. Luke's School of Nursing and her RN from Kirkwood Community College. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital for 30 years, both as a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse and in the WIC Clinic. LeAnn enjoyed collecting antiques, reading books, and going to the casino. Her family will especially remember the fishing trips to Wisconsin and camping in Tama. LeAnn also enjoyed her many friends and the many cards games they shared.
LeAnn was preceded in death by her parents; and her father-in-law, Ward Viter.
A special thank you to St. Luke's Hospice for their compassionate care of LeAnn.
LeAnn was a great mentor. We had more fun on the night shift then anyone should . She made work fun and impacted many people’s lives in a positive way. She will be greatly missed. Jill Mulford
I worked with LeAnn in the WIC clinics at Taylor. She was always great to work with and wonderful with the families. Our “offices” at Taylor were all in one room with cubicle walls separating the spaces, so we could frequently hear each other if we were trying. There was one time LeAnn was meeting with a family with a little guy who needed to get a finger poked for a lead draw. This little guy really did NOT want to do this and was trying his best to reason with LeAnn and his mom about not doing it and was getting more desparate. Eventually we all heard the little guy just holler “I don’t have any blood!” LeAnn calmly responded with laughter in her voice, that we have to try and we’ll see together. (The little guy did have blood by the way. And was quickly soothed after the poke with a hug from mom and small reward.)
I am so sorry for the Viter family that you have to grieve for LeAnn. May the pain you feel now be tempered with good memories, grace and strength for this next phase of life.
Your smile and kind spirit will always be with us.
She was my angel who saved my life when I had a bicycle accident back in September 1982. On her way home from a night shift of private duty nursing. She stopped to help as I was laying along the side of the road. She stayed with me till the ambulance came. Who would have every thought we would end up working together a short time later. My sweet angel LeAnn . I will miss you here on earth. I know for sure she will be watching over all of us now and forever. R.I.P. my angel

To My Bestie and Beloved family,
So many things and thoughts…ah…
“I liked her in the beginning – and loved her by the end. ”
I will miss LeAnn the rest of my days on earth and would like to share with you words from our last talk. ” Ten years aren’t enough time to say it all- I loved her and one day I’ll come through those pearly gates looking for her and calling her name”
Till we meet again…

My condolences and prayers go out to the Viter family. LeAnn and I grew up together and our parents were good friends. LeAnn and I used to celebrate our birthdays together. I am just so sorry for your loss and I hope your wonderful memories of a beautiful person will help you through this very difficult time.
