Ben Albaugh

Floyd C. "Ben" Albaugh, 84, died Friday, June 4, 2004 in the Mechanicsville Care and Rehab Center from a short illness. Services 2:00 p.m., Monday, (6-8-2004) in the Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices Mount Vernon Chapel by the Reverend Linda Stransky. The family will greet friends Sunday, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Burial in Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Surviving Ben are: his wife Judy, a daughter Karen (Fred) Dickey of Mechanicsville and their children Renae, Regina, Rod, Randy, and granddaughters Brandi and Shelby; 5-step children: Larry Henkel and Laura Vergara of Columbus Junction, Joe (Vicki) Mull of Stanwood, Karla Moravek of Mechanicsville, Kathy Navarro of West Branch; 12 step-grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 1 step great grandchild., and a sister Pearl Martin of Beaumont, Texas. Preceding Ben in death were his first wife Doris who died in 1966, a son Dennis who died in 1984, a brother William Glenn, a sister Jean McDonald, a step-son Gary Henkel, and his faithful friend and companion, his dog Mitzi. Ben was born March 16, 1920 in rural Mechanicsville on the family farm, the oldest child of Ralph and Grace Reisland Albaugh. He married Doris Woods in 1939. Ben joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and served with General George S. Patton during World War II earning a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He worked for Joe Gamble in the Gamble Feed Store in Mechanicsville for many years. Later Ben drove truck for Wilbur Colby Farms. He also worked for Norman and Marge Williams in the Kent Feed Store, Mechanicsville, and retired from Jack's Feed and Grain in Stanwood. Ben married Judy Davidson May 8th, 1993 at Koch's Meadow Lake in Tipton. He was a member of Busch-Dennis American Legion Post #309 for 58 years. Ben was a volunteer fireman for both Mechanicsville and Stanwood starting his service in 1954. He was a member of the Cedar County Saddle Club and the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. Ben loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, gardening, and bird watching. His good sense of humor and endless stories kept old and young alike entertained.
