Terry Shaun Gugler-Barth 39 of Mount Vernon died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at his Mount Vernon home from cancer. Ceremony of Remembering will be Saturday at 6:00 p.m., at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. The family will greet friends Saturday from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m., at the chapel. Surviving Terry is his wife Rebecca Layne at home, his parents Wayne and Shirley Gugler of Mount Vernon, two sisters: Kristina Gugler of Mount Vernon and Heather Gugler of Iowa City. Preceding Terry in death were his grandparents: Lester and Kitty Gugler and Lowell and Mary Swanson. Terry was born August 29, 1965 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Wayne and Shirley Swanson Gugler. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1983, and received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1997. Terry spent two years working at American Classic, fabricating custom pool tables, and socialized with many underground caffeine driven motorcyclists at St. Paul Minnesota. Terry moved to Des Moines in January of 2000, and reconnected with Layne Barth. They were married ten years and a day after their relationship first began. In 2002, the pair began work restoring an 1891 Queen Anne cottage in Des Moines that they lovingly called, "Emma". While in Des Moines, Terry continued his wood working for a couple of years, and also working with an old friend in architectural document reproduction. After being diagnosed with cancer, the couple returned to Mount Vernon in July of 2004. Terry always found comfort and great joy on his visits to the family farm at Mount Vernon. Terry also found great pleasure in anything that combined fast wheels, speed and competition. Terry requested potted plants in lieu of cut flowers. A memorial fund has been established.
