Donald D. "Snuffy" Smith 77 of Lisbon, died Thursday July 19, 2007 in the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from complications of Alzheimer's. The Funeral Mass for Don will be Monday at 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon by the Reverend Jim Brokman. Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m., at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel, where the Vigil Service begins at 6:30 p.m. Don will be buried in Lisbon Cemetery with military rites. Don is survived by his wife Rita and their children: Tom (Mickey) of Enid, Oklahoma, David (Luann) of Martelle, Nancy (Randy) Williams of Marion, John (Karla) of Springville, Jeff (Wendi) of Tipton, and Joe (Kim) of Mechanicsville; nineteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. "Snuffy" was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters Ruth Ann, Laura Mae, and Helen "Toots"; two brothers: Jack and Jim; three brothers-in-law: Francis "Chicken", Paul, and Harold. Don was born August 5, 1929, in Hopkinton, the son of Raymond and Veronica Pick Smith. In 1943, he moved to Remsen with his family. He served in Korea as an Army medic during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as a Staff Sergeant. Don was a member of the Cyclops American Legion Post #109 of Lisbon. Don married Rita Ortmann November 10, 1953 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple moved to the Lisbon/Sutliff area in 1954. Don went to work at a body shop in Mount Vernon until he and Dave Albright opened D & D Auto Body in Lisbon in the late 50's. In 1961, Don went to work for Allen Motor Company in Cedar Rapids as a body shop foreman, retiring in 1987. After retirement, he worked part time for ten years at Lloyd Table Company in Lisbon. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Don enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. He was the "Lawn Ranger" pampering his yard. He enjoyed sharing his passion for old cars and John Deere garden tractors at Lisbon Sauerkraut Days. He especially loved welcoming family and friends over to share a "cold beer". Don was very proud of his family and will be deeply missed. Following the graveside committal, a luncheon will be served at the Regal Crown Reception Hall, 1003 North Washington, Lisbon, IA. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Don's honor.
Dear Rita, I was so very sorry to learn of Don’s passing. I didn’t realize he was in the care center. I know all to well your heartache right now, but also know you and Don had many wonderful years together and made a lot of great memories.
