Luretta T. Hendriks

Luretta Marian Tipton "Tippy" Hendriks, 86 of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday July 24, 2007 in her home from a long illness. Funeral Services 2:00 p.m., Monday (July 30, 2007) at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time Monday in the chapel. Her body will be deeded to the State University of Iowa College of Medicine. Survivors include her husband, Herbert E. Hendriks, Sr.; a son, Herbert E. Hendriks, Jr., M.D., and his wife Carol Ann Hendriks of Piedmont Lake Road, Pine Mountain, Georgia; a grandson, Scott E. Hendriks (Cheryl) of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Dana A. Daniele (Eric) of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and their mother, Joan D. Hendriks of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; a brother, Lee G. Tipton and his wife Margaret of Centennial, Colorado; two step-grandsons, Jason and Brandon Milling; and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers-in-law, Harold J. and Marion Hendriks and Leslie and Lorrene Hendriks and a niece, Mary Luretta Hendriks. Luretta was born near Conesville, Iowa on June 5, 1921, the daughter of Roy E. Tipton and Lura McCullough Tipton. She attended elementary schools in Long Beach and Alhambra, California, but returned to Iowa and graduated from West Liberty High School, where she was active in music, plays, and student government. She attended Cornell College, at Mount Vernon, Iowa on an academic scholarship. On Easter Sunday, April 13, 1941 she was married to Herbert E. Hendriks in the William Fletcher King Chapel at Cornell College by then College President Benjamin Magee. They lived in Syracuse, New York, Iowa City, Iowa, Texas and Jackson, Mississippi where their only child, Herbert E. Hendriks, Jr. was born on V-E Day, May 8, 1945. While her husband was stationed at Fort Lee, they lived in Petersburg, Virginia. They returned to Iowa City and then Mount Vernon where Herbert finished graduate school and returned to Cornell to teach Geology. Luretta complete her B.A. degree in English at Cornell, graduating cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1963, and received her M.A. degree, also in English, at the State University of Iowa in 1969. Luretta was a "people" person, her family and friends her dearest possessions. Much of her life centered around Cornell College where she worked in the Academic Dean's Office, the Registrar's Office and taught in the English Department. She served as sponsor of the two womens' social groups, of Mortar Board for two 3-year terms, and of the Oxfordettes. Her husband and she were the first Danforth Associate faculty couple at Cornell, holding study groups with students in their home, and otherwise entertaining students, college wide. They had many Geology Club picnics in their backyard. Luretta often recruited alumni children and others as students. She was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Ingleside Book Club, Chapter DT, PEO and a former member of AAUW and the League of Women Voters. Reading, writing and music were her favorite hobbies. At Meth-Wick she enjoyed working in the Deer Ridge Library, Write/Share, the Meth-Wick Book Club, and the wonderful residents at Meth-Wick. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for three years. Memorial gifts may be made to the Mount Vernon Methodist Church, 304 1st St. W; the Hendriks Geology Student Research Fund at Cornell College, 600 1st St. W., both of Mount Vernon, Iowa 52314; or to the Meth-Wick Community, 1224 13th St. NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405.

  1. Dear Mr. Hendricks and Herb, I was so very sorry to read of Mrs. Hendrick’s passing. What a sweet, wonderful lady she was. I will always remember her easy smile and soft voice. She was such a pleasure to visit with when I worked at the grocery store. I know you have many fond memories of her, hold those close. They will help you thru these most difficult days.
