Lawrence R. "Larry" Covington 74, died Wednesday October 3, 2007 in Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Funeral services 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Lisbon United Methodist Church, by the Reverend Tom Mattson. Burial with fire department rites at the Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 until 6:00pm Sunday at the Morgan Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Larry is survived by his wife Carol, his son Larry L. and special friend Pam Walz, Mount Vernon, his two daughters, Luann and husband David Smith of Martelle and Cheryl and husband Scott MacDowell of Platteville, Wisconsin. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Larry M. and Tracy Covington, Blake and Sarah Covington, Kendra and Robby Kamerling, Krista and Adam Flockhart, Cody Harris, Kiley Harris and Samuel MacDowell. Five-and-one half great grandchildren; Quintin and Olivia Covington, Keean and Kelsey Kamerling, Madison Flockhart, and baby Covington due in February. Four brothers and sisters; Hilda Steiner, Frieda and Jerry Delarm, Eldon Covington, and Belva Covington, sister in-law Rosie Covington and brother in-law Don Zirtzman, and a special four legged friend, "Tamolly". Larry was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Bessie (Moyer) Covington, and siblings; Wilma Pospisil, Galen Covington, and Margaret Zirtzman. Larry was born September 17, 1933, in Central City. He married Carol Rundle on September 13, 1953 in Monticello. He and his family moved to Mount Vernon in 1964 from Cedar Rapids. Larry worked for Cornell College as Physical Plant Director for twenty years. He then owned and operated Covington Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Department serving as both Assistant and Fire Chief for several years. Larry enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid camper and "conversationalist". He was the best husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa that anyone could ask for. Larry will be greatly missed and forever remembered. A memorial fund has been established.
