Donald Dean Kahl, 67 of 2509 33rd Ave. S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday September 12, 2007 in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from complications of pneumonia and kidney failure. A Celebration of Life for Don will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday at Eden United Church of Christ in Cedar Rapids, by the Reverend Glenn Hunt. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 1:00 p.m., until time of service at the church. Burial in Lisbon Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements with Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Don is survived by his wife of almost forty years, Connie, children; Allison (Jason) Svestka, Susan Mart and Jeffrey Franta all of Cedar Rapids, and five grandchildren; Morgana and Zane Svestka, Anthony Brown, Jennifer Holder and Katie Brant. Preceding Don in death were his parents and four younger brother and sisters. Don was born June 26, 1940 in Rock Rapids, the son of Albert and Verna Pettengill Kahl. He graduated from Alvord, Iowa High School, attended Agustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and graduated from DeVry Technical Institute at Chicago. Don retired from Rockwell Collins as a technical writer. He was a very active member of the Eden United Church of Christ attending Sunday School and Bible Study. Don was a member of the Model A Restorers Club, Antique Automobile Club of America, and the Early V-8 Club. Don was an avid collector, collecting antique cars and radios. He never threw anything away. He enjoyed driving and restoring antique cars. He was never afraid of starting a thousand mile "journey" in a Model A Ford. Don was an enthusiast of the Cubs, read all kinds of books, and as his family said, "it was like living with a set of verbal encyclopedias." He was the king of trivia and he knew something about everything. He loved watching his grandchildren. Don enjoyed his journey through life collecting friends, family, and giving memories that we will always remembered. A memorial fund has been established.
