Helen E. Evans

Helen Moffit Evans, 95, of 2115 First Avenue S.E., Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, November 28, 2007 in the health care center at Cottage Grove Place, from cancer. A graveside service for Helen will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday for family and friends at Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery, by the Reverend Jim Langley. A luncheon will be served at the Evans home, 313 2nd Ave S.W., in Mount Vernon, following the service. There will be a Celebration of Life Service, 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 4, in Oak Hall at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Emory Gillespie. Helen was born a mile and a half west of Mechanicsville on the family Century farm, August 17, 1912. She graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1929. Helen married Leoral Evans on December 2, 1934. She was a homemaker all of her life except for a short period during World War II when she worked at La Plant Choate in Cedar Rapids, until the death of her sister-in-law when she was called upon to raise her infant nephew, William Moffitt. Four years later she gave birth to their daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Helen enjoyed cooking and was well known for her dinner parties. She enjoyed playing golf with the women at Hillcrest Country Club, Mount Vernon where she occasionally won a tournament. For over fifty years, Helen and Leoral enjoyed their bridge club. Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Mount Vernon for seventy-two years. Leoral and Helen were founding members and stockholders of Hillcrest Country Club. Helen was a Past Worthy Advisor of the Mount Vernon Eastern Star. Helen was proud to be a contributor to the School Foundation establishing the Evans-Moffitt Scholarship Fund at the Mount Vernon Community Schools. Believing in education, she endowed the elementary school libraries at Mount Vernon, Lisbon, and Mechanicsville. Surviving Helen are her daughter Mary and husband James of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Joshua and Seth Evans and Rachael Taylor of Longview, Texas; a nephew William Moffit and wife Lilli of Reno, Nevada; and their children Chuck and Char Moffit. Preceding Helen in death were her husband Leoral of seventy years, her parents William and Nellie Brink Moffit, and two brothers and one sister: Maurice and Forest Moffit and Mildred Hargrove Allen.   1. Dearest Mary and Jim, It was with much sadness that I read about Helen just today. What a lovely gentle woman she was. We always enjoyed her.
