John Sterner, 78, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008, in his Mount Vernon home from complications due to Pulmonary Fibrosis. Memorial service, 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Lisbon United Methodist Church, by Pastor Tom Mattson. An informal memorial open house will be Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., at the Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Burial 1:00 p.m., Saturday in Rochester Cemetery, with military rites. John is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Teri (Chuck) Hoy, Mechanicsville and son Van (Jeannie) Sterner, Hornick, Iowa, five grandchildren: Jonna and Mathew Hoy and Kirby (Julien) Chazel, Grant and Shelby Sterner, his mother-in-law, Edna Ehresman, two sister-in-laws; Betty (Larry) Coonrod and Lola Maher, many nieces, nephew, and cousins. John is also survived by all of their day care kids who called him 'Papa.' Preceding John in death were his parents Van and Delight Howe Sterner, and five brothers and sisters; Lee, Edna, Alta, Dale, and Warren, and several close friends. John was born April 24, 1930 in Rochester Township. He attended Springdale Country School, graduated from Tipton High School 1947, and graduated from auto body repair school in Chicago in 1949. John served in Japan during the Korean War and was a past member of the Cyclops Post #109. John married Pat Nelson, December 4, 1954 in Tipton. He was also a faithful member of the Lisbon United Methodist Church. He built, owned and operated Lisbon Auto Body, retiring in 1995, to fish, turkey hunt, and play golf. John was a well respected business man and will be missed by all. Memorials in John's honor, have been established.
