Ashley E. Himes

August 1, 1991 ~ April 13, 2009

Ashley E. Himes, 17 of Mechanicsville, was called home Monday, April 13, 2009 to be with her Lord, surrounded by her family, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, at North Cedar High School, Stanwood, by the Reverend Linda Stransky. Friends may call Thursday 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville. Surviving Ashley are her parents Dave and Deb Himes, Mechanicsville, brother Zach Himes, and fianc Kristen Soper, Ames, grandparents James and Margaret Glover, aunts and uncles; Mark and Dee Ann Glover, Calvin and Donna Paup, all of Mechanicsville, Dan Himes, Dubuque, and Deanna Mizaur, Clarence. She is also survived by cousins; Mike (Kristen), Pat (Jenny) and Tyler Glover, Stacy Griffith, Chad (Renae) Paup, and Victoria Himes, and her special Yorkie, Cy, and her many teachers and friends. Preceding Ashley in death were grandparents, Dave "Bulldog" and Marge Himes, Uncle Dee Himes, Cousin Sergeant Donald Griffith, great grandparents; Harold and Irene Streets, and Gladys Judd. Ashley was born August 1, 1991 in Cedar Rapids. She was a senior at North Cedar High School. During her high school years, Ashley lettered in the following activities: Varsity Softball, (first team all-conference and honorable mention for all-state), Varsity Track and Field, (where she was a state qualifier in discus and is a school record holder) and Varsity Basketball. Ashley also enjoyed playing in A.S.A. Softball, taking her and her dad on many weekend "road trips." In addition, she also participated in Math Club, Student Council, N.C.H.S. Ladies Jazz Choir, N.C.H.S. Choir, N.C.H.S. Yearbook Staff, and the National Honor Society. Ashley was the 'grandmaster' of text messaging, with a personal record of 22,000 messages in one month. Ashley was a member of the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. Through her illness, her Christian faith grew stronger and she "BELIEVED." She was a member of the Dance Marathon, raising money for children's cancer research and walked in the Cancer Relay for Life. Ashley was an inspiration to all she touched by her strength, courage and determination, always putting others before herself. In lieu of flowers and green plants, donations in Ashley's memory will be used to honor her through a scholarship for North Cedar High School students.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss, your hearts are broken, please be strong. When Nicole died it was the hardest thing I ever lived through. But time will heal all wounds. The few times I me Ashley and I was so touched, she was a very nice person to converse with, and I know the God of Heaven called her home early, but I am he has great plans for her.   4. Deb,Dave,Zach and Kristen, We are all mournig the loss of Ashley. She was a brave and courageous young woman who taught us all want it meant to be strong. She touched many lives in such a positive way and we will miss her greatly. Our prayers are with you.

  5. We so enjoyed watching Ashley and all the girls playing baseball basketball and track we miss those days and our hearts were broken the day we heard of Ashley’s illness. We wactched her struggle the days and months after and were in awe of her bravery. Ashley is truely an inspiration and we pray that her inspiration lives in the hearts and minds of all that knew her untill they too meet our God, we also pray is what will be a very long life unlike Ahley’s it saddens us to say of whom was lost to this earth much, much to soon.
