David Paul Spellerberg

David Paul Spellerberg, 38 of Mount Vernon, died Thursday, October 8, 2009 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from serious head injuries caused by a fall while painting. Funeral Mass, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. Friends may call Monday, from 3:00 until 7:30 p.m., at the church. The Wake Service begins at 7:30 p.m. Burial in Campbell Cemetery, rural Bertram. Surviving David is his mother Janet, three brothers: Bill Jr., Pat, and Dan, all of Mount Vernon. David is preceded in death by his father Bill and sister Cynthia Spellerberg Kamberling. David was born July 27, 1971 in Cedar Rapids, the son of William "Bill" and Janet Gilroy Spellerberg. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1989, and recently attended his 20th year class reunion this summer. David graduated with an associate degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology from Kirkwood Community College. David was a member of the Plumber and Pipe-fitters Union Local #125, Cedar Rapids. He completed his apprenticeship with Bowker Mechanical and worked there for the past seventeen years, most recently as a foreman. He lived and farmed with his brothers on the family farm near Mount Vernon all his life. David was a devoted member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed deer hunting with his brothers. David played softball and was an avid Hawkeye fan. He was always willing to help friends and neighbors when they had plumbing problems. He will always be remembered for his smile. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses from the SICU at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, for their kindness and compassion during the last four weeks. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in David's name.

  6. I knew Dave when he and I both worked at Hy-Vee years ago. He and I bumped into each other several years later and he was still the same old Dave that I remembered. He knew me as Kaye Rollins. I was just told tonight of Dave’s passing and I am so, so saddened to hear this! My condolences to the Spellerberg family.
