Fred H. McLaughlin, 62 of Mount Vernon, died Friday, January 08, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from cancer. The family will greet friends Tuesday, 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. in Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices Mount Vernon. Burial Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Surviving Fred are his sons: Dan (Malissa) of Mount Vernon and James of Des Moines; two sisters and a brother; and a niece and nephew. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a brother. Fred was born February 5, 1947 in Cedar Rapids the son of Fred H., Sr. and Faye Richards McLaughlin. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School. After high school he served in the U.S. Army in Viet Nam. Fred worked for the City of Mount Vernon for twenty-five years and retired in 2002. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years, and was a member of United Teamsters Union. A memorial fund in Fred's name has been established. Dear Louise and Dan, I was so very sorry to learn of Fred’s passing….what a kind and gentle person he was. I always enjoyed waiting on him at the store, he always was so positive….
