Vernon E. Burge, 95, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Unity Point Health-St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Per Vernons request, services and burial will be at a later date. Vernon is survived by his wife Helen of seventy-two years, two sons: David (Joan) and Keith (Linda) Burge of Mount Vernon, and daughter Linda (Earl) Freese, Howe, Texas, 9-grandchildren, and 9-great grandchildren. Preceding Vernon in death was his sister Jean Johnston. Vernon was born on the Burge family farm, February 19, 1919, the son of Harold and Marjorie Brown Burge. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1937, and married Helen Light, April 16, 1942. Vernon retired in 1984. He was the fifth generation to farm the Burge ground. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon. Vernon loved to farm, spending hours on the tractor, operating machinery, and caring for livestock stopping only for Helens good cooking. Vernon never met a stranger. He and Helen enjoyed lake fishing in Minnesota and Texas, also wintering in southern Texas with the usual snow bird friends. He loved to drive and see what was over the next hill. One of Vernons passions was to support his grandchildren in all their activities. Memorials in Vernons honor may be given to the Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Department. Cards may be sent to: Vernon Burge Memorial c/o Morgan Funeral Choices, 715 10th Ave. SW, Mount Vernon, IA 52314. On-line condolences: www.morganfuneralchoices.com
