Darla Mae Samsel, 63, of Cedar Rapids, died February 21, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, after a battle with cancer. She requested no services and has generously chosen to donate her body to the University of Iowa in hopes that knowledge can be gained as a result of her death. Darla was born August 21, 1948, in Windom Minnesota, the daughter of Robert and Edna (Kirstein) Samsel. She was married to Stanley Mattson for 40 years, later divorcing. She worked retail for many years. Some of the things she enjoyed were camping, gardening, working on and connecting with friends on her computer and collecting soda memorabilia (Pepsi, of course). Survivors include her son, Damon (Danyel) Mattson of Savage, Minnesota; daughters, Dawn (Jeff) Schultz of Welcome, Minnesota, and Shari (Gary) Arndt of Owatonna, Minnesota; brothers, Robert (Wan) Samsel and Mike (Sheila) Samsel; six grandchildren, Gray Mattson, Megan, Trevor and Emily Schultz, and Nicole and Mavrick Raygor; six great-grandchildren; and nephew, Tony Brewer and special friend, John Hixson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Carol; and her brother, Curt. Memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
Too many years distant in miles and speaking so little. Times lost. May Darla be at peace and may the family find the strength to move on with pleasant memorys.
To Darla’s family,
I am the chaplain at Hospice House and spent much time with Darla during her last days. I want you to know how grateful she was to you for coming to see her and bringing babies, yourselves, and pictures. I was out of town when Darla died, but I feel she made the passage safely. We all miss her. She was very special to all who cared for her.
God bless you all. Please know I remember you as well in my thoughts and prayers.
