Cathy McCusker, 55, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at her parent's home. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2009, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, by Deacon Jim Berger. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Survivors include her parents, William and Norma McCusker of Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Mike (Michelle) of Cedar Rapids, Tim (Janice) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and John (Shary) of Cedar Rapids; six nephews, Brian, Derek, Trevor, Drew, Kyle, and Payne; two nieces, Shayla and Aubrey; and a special aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Jerry Britt of Waterloo. Cathy was born May 27, 1954, in Oakland, California. She graduated from Regis High School in 1972. For all of her adult life, Cathy fought courageously against the relentless and dimly understood condition of severe mental illness. Cathy will be remembered as a generous, warm, and compassionate person who cherished her nieces and nephews. Memorials may be directed to the Abbe Center for Community Mental Health, 520 11th St. NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405.

  8. I am so sorry for your loss and I will keep you all in my prayers. I haven’t seen Cathy in many years, but have often thought of her and the fun times we had when we were in school. She was a good friend and KXM0caring to everyone. I live in Michigan now, but my sister sent the notice to me. I know you have the sympathy of many friends who enjoyed her friendship and kindness as well.

  9. I worked with Cathy at Kresge at Lindale Mall when we were both in high school. I remember her long dark hair and beautiful smile. She still has that same smile. Praying you will find comfort in Him during this difficult time.

  10. I have fond memories of walking to the Kenwood Library Extension the summers of seventh and eighth grades with Cathy: none of my other friends liked to read! We would go and check out scads of books.

    So sorry for the loss your sister. Always cherish the memories of the good times you enjoyed with her.

  12. I will remember long warm evenings playing freeze tag and statue in our front yard, Camp Fire meetings and walks up to Paramount Pharmacy. Dad always called Cathy “Lefty” and she was a welcome visitor to our home. She was brilliant and fun to be with. I wish you peace, Cathy.
