Donald George Furman, 62, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 29, 2012, after a long illness. A memorial service will be held at Mission of Hope, 1537 1st Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, on Thursday, February 2, 2012, at 11 a.m. Survivors include a sister, Susan Furman-Miller of Cedar Rapids; a sister in law, Barb Furman of Sarasota, Florida; two brothers, Dan Furman and wife Kathy of Marion and Walter Furman II of Keala-kekua, Hawaii; five nephews; three nieces; and several special great nieces and nephews. Born October 15, 1949, in Cedar Rapids to Walter and Kathryn Zuber Furman of South Amana, Don was a graduate of the University of Iowa School of Business and a 1967 graduate of Amana High School. A member of the National Honor Society, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Campus R.O.T.C. and President of Inter-fraternity Council while on campus at the University of Iowa, he was well respected. He married Christine Langel in 1974, and they later divorced. Don worked for many years in both the automotive and industrial equipment sales market. He invested a lot of time into the study of proper nutrition and loved being able to counsel and assist others to live healthier lifestyles. His greatest joy was to play the piano, sing hymns in his lovely tenor voice, spend time with the family he loved dearly and help with any project that the family might have in the working. While still able, he attended church services at Mission of Hope in Cedar Rapids. He was a wonderful brother and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew his heart. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James W. Furman; and a sister, Barbara K. Schaefer.
Our deepest sympathies on your loss.
Dan, Walter & Family
My Deepest symathy on the loss of your brother. May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.”

Jeff & I were saddened to hear that you had lost Donny. I know that it has been a struggle for quite some time, we hope that your wonderful memories will lift up your hearts in the very dark hours ahead. Your family is in your prayers, praise God he has went home to be with the Lord. Love to you all, Lisa & Jeff.
Don was a good friend and Fraternity brother. He loved Sigma Chi and he was an inspiration to us. I have many fond memories of Don and laugh out loud when I recall his “what we have here is a failure to communicate” line.He has entered the Chapter Eternal and we miss him.
I coached Don in Little League and Pony League and always admired him…he was such a fine young person and a good athlete. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Susan and family,
We were so sorry to hear about Don’s passing. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
I didn’t know Donald, but I did know his parents and Walter.
Walter, I wanted to express our condolences to you, but I have no address other than this. It must be very hard to lose a brother.
Jan
To all the family, I would like to express my sympathy. I have many warm memories of Don “lighting up a room” with his leadership and enthusiasm. He was student body president at Amana High School when i was a freshman in class with Barb, and we were in awe of his spirit and compassion, as he planned events and led his teams to victories. I was on the student council that year and thought “wow” when he asked one of the girls to a dance. He was so out of my league but I remember how I had a crush more on his personality than his looks, and we all know he had the looks! He was beautiful inside and out, and a wonderful Christian leader and I will always remember him from that time!
I am sorry to learn of your loss of Donald. The Bible assures us at John 5:28,29 that there will be a resurrection. May your family find comfort as you put faith in the promises of our loving heavenly Father, Almighty God Jehovah.
Susan, Barb, Tina and family:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
I have great memories of playing baseball with Don on the Iowa freshman team and Amana town team. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and I hope you cherish the great memories you shared.
Dear Susan
We grew up as neighbors and although we have not kept in close contact we were saddened to learn of Don’s passing and wanted to express our sympathy to you and all of Don’s family.
Don was my Pledge Father and Brother in the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He was a great inspiration to me and all of our Brothers. I remember the many talks we had the lessons he passed on to us.
Now that he has entered the Chapter Eternal, I’m sure it is a brighter, warmer place with his presence.
I was in the process of doing a search for a very dear and important friend in my life and sadly came up with this obituary.Don was my best man in our wedding in St. Louis back in 1979. We were able to get together several times after and kept in touch for quite awhile afterward, but lost touch several years after he lost his mom. Don was always a friend you could count on and we shared a lot of great times during our Ford days. I’m sad I wasn’t around in his latter years and hope to reunite with him in a better place. My sympathies go out to his family and other friends.
I remember the first time I met Donnie. I thought “boy can Susan’s brother talk”. As time went on spending time with Donnie was such a pleasure. He was so peaceful and he loved to share his knowledge of so many things, including his love for our Lord Jesus, personal growth, and healthy ways to live.
I am way late in responding with a memory, but Donnie’s teaching of life’s lessons remains within me and I am certain with everyone Donnie touched. I know without a shadow of a doubt that Donnie is in the Heavenly’s walking with Jesus.
Sending my Love to Susie, Stephanie, Emmie, Barb and other members of the Furman Family,
Ann Schulte
