Robert Laurence "Bob" Davis, 93 of Anamosa, died Sunday, December 30th, at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Bob was born May 2, 1919, on a farm near Corydon in southern Iowa, the son of Lucy (Peck) and Ernest Friend Davis. He graduated from Cambria, Iowa High School and then went on to Iowa State College where he received a degree in Agricultural Education. Following college, he entered the army and spent 4 �� years in service. 1st Lieutenant Davis was in the 29th Division as an artillery forward observer and made the landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Oakleaf Cluster. When he returned home, he married his college sweetheart, Dorothy Klaus, in 1946. To this union were born two children, Nancy and Steven. Bob farmed and then operated a farm store in Colesburg. The family later moved to Mechanicsville, where Bob managed a fertilizer plant and later worked in the bank. Retirement took them to Mt. Vernon for a number of years, then to Cedar Rapids and, in recent years, to Anamosa. Bob was a faithful United Methodist, a long-time member of Lions and the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing roses and strawberries, and had a chair caning business during his early retirement years. He and Dorothy loved to travel. In 1991, Bob and Dorothy retraced Bob's journey through France after the D-Day landing 50 years earlier. In October of 2011, Bob was thrilled to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. His faith, his family and his friends were the passions of his life. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Lucy Davis, wife Dorothy, son Steven, sisters Elizabeth Thompson, Esther Hughes and Dorothy Storm, brother Richard Davis, brothers-in-law Robert Collins, Arthur Hughes, Harvey Thompson, Virgil Storm, and sisters-in-law Margaret Collins and Betty Davis. Bob is survived by his daughter Nancy (Dennis) Mulford of Anamosa, daughter-in-law Sharon Davis of Marion, grandchildren; Tim (Mika) Mulford of Camdenton, MO, Sara Mulford of Leavenworth, KS, Brian Davis and fianc��e Katie Brown, and Christine Davis of Cedar Rapids and two great-grandchildren; Dylan Davis and Paige Mulford, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service celebrating Bob's life will be held on Thursday January 3, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with military honors at the Anamosa United Methodist Church with Reverend Laurie Riley officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before the service Thursday also at the Anamosa United Methodist Church. Burial at Zion Cemetery in Colesburg will follow the service and luncheon. A memorial fund in Bob's honor has been established.
