Michael Vernon "Mike" Baker, 53 of 1124 10th St., SE, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Saturday, September 24, 2005 at 6:30 a.m., at Mercy Medical Center Cedar Rapids, from a long illness. A gathering will be 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices Mount Vernon Chapel where the casket will be closed. Private services will be held Monday at Cedar Memorial Cemetery by (remove deacon) Elder (add Elder)Robert Landis. Left to cherish his memory: a sister Jane Hardin of Horn Lake, Mississippi, two brothers: James of Lake Crystal Minnesota and Russell (Rosemary) of Newport News, Virginia; his grandmother Edna Remington, four aunts: Rita Urbanek and Connie (Don) Lochner all of Marion, Iona Hrdlicka of Marion, and Barbara Nibeck of Cedar Rapids, three uncles: Kenneth (Suzanne) Campbell and Elton J. (Lorraine) Remington and, Ronald (Rosie) Campbell of Marion; a step-mother Annamae Baker of Mount Vernon, a step-sister Lynette (David) Koffron of Mount Vernon, a step-brother Mark (Deanna) Rodman, a special Companion Tressa Slaubaugh, special care giver Deb Martin; both of Cedar Rapids, and his beloved motorcycle, a 1996 special Harley. Preceding Mike in death were his beloved mother Barbara Remington Baker who died in 1970, his father Vernon who died in 1997, maternal grandfather Elton Remington, and paternal grandparents; Melvin "Jake" and Loretta Campbell. Mike was born November 23, 1951 at Savannah, Illinois, the second child of Vernon and Barbara Baker. His family relocated to Mount Vernon in 1960, where Mike attended Mount Vernon Elementary School. As a junior in the Mount Vernon High School, he was a star running back until suffering a serious knee injury. Mike enlisted in the Army and was a field artillery specialist, serving a tour of duty in Germany. Mike worked as a Boilermaker for fifteen years until he suffered a severe injury in a fall, and was a member of the Ironworkers Union at Cedar Rapids. Mike had a deep love of the outdoors, and was noted for his expert fishing and hunting.   1. I AM SENDING MY CONDOLENCES FOR MIKE. WE HAD A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP. I WILL MISS ALL OF HIS HELP WHEN I NEEDED SOMEONE TO TALK TO. HE MEANT A LOT TO ME AND MY AUNT TRESSA. HE HAD A GOOD HEART, IT JUST TOOK SOME SEARCHING TO FIND IT. HE BELIVES IN JESUS AND I KNOW I’LL SEE HIM AGAING IN HEAVEN. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED US INCLUDING MY ECSPECIALLY MY AUNT TRESSA FOR ALL HER LOVE AND SUPPORT. HE ALWAYS KNEW WHEN SHE OR I WAS AT THE HOSPITAL. WE KNEW HOW TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS SAYING UNLIKE THE NURSES THAT WERE THERE. ALSO WANT TO THANK HOSPICE OF MERCY, BOB DAVENPORT, JEFF-THE POLICEMEN WHO ALWAYS CHECKED IN ON HIM, CONNIE HIS AUNT WHO MAKE US FOOD AND OFFERED ALL HER SUPPORT, RITA-WHO TOLD US A LOT ABOUT MIKE THAT WE DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT HIM. I LOVED HIM AS A FRIEND AND CAREGIVER. IT WAS AND STILL IS A VERY SORROWFUL TIME IN MY LIFE. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT HE WAS SAVED BY JESUS CHRIST AND ALL WHO ACCEPT JESUS WILL BE TOGETHER AGAIN IN HEAVEN. THANK YOU, DEBORAH K. MARTIN
