Lamont Woelk

June 20, 1927 ~ June 12, 2016

Lamont Alvin Woelk, 89, of Marion, passed away at his home on Sunday, June 13, 2016. In lieu of services, Lamont would like it very much if you take a few moments to enjoy your family. Lamont was born June 20, 1927, in Newton, Kansas to Alvin and Linda (Galle) Woelk. He was the oldest of five children. Most of his childhood was spent on the family farm east of Walton, Kansas. He graduated from Walton High School in 1945. Lamont attended Bethel College in Newton, Kansas from 1948 to 1952, where he met Lillian Loeffler. They married June 3, 1951. Lamont's faith was very important to him. He was baptized upon his confession of faith in 1942 and became a charter member of the Walton Mennonite Church. In 1947, while attending the triannual session of the General Conference Mennonite Church in Berne, Indiana, he felt God calling him to the ministry. After graduating from Bethel College, he trained and studied at various seminaries, obtaining a Masters of Divinity degree. Lamont was the pastor for several churches through the years in Kansas and Pennsylvania. While in Topeka, Kansas, he spent two years as a chaplain-in-training in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Topeka State Hospital. After retiring from the ministry he worked as a counselor and pastoral service resource person for local clergy and hospitals in Quakertown, Penn. In 1982 Lamont and Lillian moved to Richlandtown, Pennsylvania to an old Victorian house. He enjoyed restoring and remodeling the home, appreciating its woodwork. He also enjoyed gardening, photography, and family and church history. He made a pictorial history album of his children's four grandparents for each of them, including centuries old photos, genealogies, and histories. Lamont and Lillian enjoyed traveling the country, spending vacations sight-seeing, visiting antique shops, and visiting their beloved children and grandchildren. They also shared a love of classical and choral music. Survivors include his cherished wife, Lillian; children, Alethea Woelk (Kurt Bloomberg) , LaNae (Scott) Hartvickson, Laurel (Grace) Woelk, Linley (Cynthia) Woelk, Lyman Woelk; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Larson. Lamont was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Linda; and siblings Leland, Ardis and Loren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to support the Music Department of Bethel College, 300 East 27th Street North Newton, KS 67117.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Aunt Lillian,

Uncle Ervin just called us with the news of Lamont’s passing. Menno and Edith send their love and prayers to you and your family. You are all in our hearts. Judy Enns Bryant

  2. Just read Lamont’s obituary in The Newton Kansan. I am sad to hear of his passing. I remember him so well when he was the pastor at The First Mennonite Church in Ransom, Kansas. I was young……in the youth group and we all enjoyed his youthfulness and energy! I remember he was the reason I considered going to Camp Mennonascah……..and have good memories of my time there. My dad was a deacon at the time that Lamont was there and he thought Lamont was a great minister……..coming from my dad that
was quite a compliment! I remember dad calling him “Montie”……..not to his face but when he talked
about him……an endearing name! Lillian I believe that you have many wonderful memories of him as a husband, father, friend and minister! Just wanted you to know that he encouraged me to become a Christian and provided a model for me to imitate and learn to love and feel compassion for others!……….one of many I am sure.

  3. A kind and gentle soul, he was my pastor as I was growing up in Topeka. I’,m happy that I started out my church experience with him. I only have fond memories. He made the world a better place. Monica Schrag

  4. As I was going to Saint Ives,
I crossed the path of seven wives.
    Every wife had seven sacks,
    Every sack had seven cats,
    Every cat had seven kittens,
    Kittens, cats, sacks, wives,
How many were going to Saint Ives?

A favorite of Grandpa’s. I love you and will miss you Grandpa!

  5. Maxine (Woelk)Miller
I Treasure the memories I have of Lamont. Even as a young man I knew he loved his God.
Lillian, I want you to know that I’m holding you up in prayer. Lamont knew that he always
had your love and support. I’m so glad that you are near some of your family at this time.

We were honored to have you two visit us in Indiana and also in McPherson, KS. In those visits I
appreciated Lamont telling about some of the Woelk history, things I had never heard. I also remember his encouragement when we were young parents in Indiana and Lillian, I imagine you remember our visit to your home in PA. I still have the photo I took of all your little ones
    !
When we went on this trip to see you,, we slept in our van as Motel money was not available. But coming to see you was worth it.

Know that you are loved and upheld in prayer.
